The latest CVS simplenews module (v 1.7 2005/08/15) has support for sending out a test newsletter to a specified email address, however setting this email address appears to be only possible via the admin setting dialogue, making it out of bounds for the average newsletter author/publisher to specify which email address to send the test newsletter to.
My question is, how is the author/publisher supposed to know if the newsletter arrived at the specified email address if that address is not their own?
ie Why wasn't an entry field allowing an override of the test email address put on the newsletter edit form itself?

Calvin

DriesK commentedThis was done on purpose: I didn't want a site admin to lose control. This is what I had in mind: a site admin sets up a team of newsletter authors, grants them the "create newsletter" but not "send newsletter" permission, and adds their e-mail address to a forwarding e-mail address (e.g. newsletter-authors@domain.com). This is the test address. If a newsletter author can override this address, a lot can be happening without the admin knowing what's going on because he doesn't receive the tests. I think he should be in control of deciding who gets the test newsletters. I a site admin decides to put someone in the newsletter team, he simply adds the e-mail address to the forwarding list.
However, I can imagine that an author of newsletter A is not interested in receiving tests from newsletter B. Or also, for some people it may be difficult to set up a forwarding e-mail address.
So what I want to consider is: 1) instead of 1 test address, there could be a test address for each newsletter, and 2) in the test address box, an admin could fill in a comma separated list of e-mail addresses instead of only 1.
Thoughts?

P00595 commentedHello Dries,
I am attempting to setup and administer a collaborative type website for a church with a congregation of approx 300 people.
The expectation is that the heads of each church department will have the authority to both author and publish newsletters, independently of the other department heads and me the administrator. Thus each department head would moderate their own content. And as an extension of this, any church member can author website content, but only department heads can publish content.
My intent as administrator was to focus on taking care of the server hardware and system software, but not get too involved in the authoring and publishing of content.
I would thus be interested in the SimpleNews module being able to send a test email only to the personal email account of the person authoring the content.

DriesK commentedI will figure out a solution. The test email sending has just been introduced, it certainly can be improved.
