Imagemenu and expanded

Does the imagemenu module support expanding menus? When I select expanded the menu always appears expanded, but when it isn't selected there is no '+' arrow indicating children items and when I click on the parent it doesn't expand to show the children items. The only way to see the children is to have it expanded which takes up a lot of space. Am i missing something or does this now work the same as the regular menu?
