I have two installation of Drupal that I am having this problem with. I cannot change usernames. Users cannot change their own usernames, even though I have set up all of the permissions.

The installations are 5.3 and 5.7.

I'm downright flummoxed about this. The only other discussion of this problem that I found was this one: http://drupal.org/node/272124.

I have been through my settings.php document, my administration area, I can't find anything that will help me with this. I need to change user names on an intranet so they fit a naming convention.

Can anyone help?

THere is a difference between SETTING and REBUILDING.

I set permissions for "administer users" and "change own username". I also hit the "rebuild permissions" button at: ?q=admin/content/node-settings/rebuild

I am "user 1" so shouldn't I be able to change these things on my own anyway?

I shut down contributed modules and the problem was gone. After a lot of enabling and disabling modules, I traced it to a conflict with the "subdomain" module. I disabled it, and everything's cool.

I was pulling out my hair over this....and was just about to disable all modules in order to troubleshoot when I found this thread. DEFINITELY a conflict with Subdomain. As soon as I disabled it all was well again. Should the maintainer of Subdomain be told about this conflict? Apologies, as I am not exactly familiar with the standard procedure here with bugs/conflicts...

go to subdomain settings, scroll all the way down, there you have an option to let users change their usernames!
if not - upgrade to the most updated module ver.

I am using the subdomains module and allowing the usernames to be changed in the subdomains cpanel and having the permissions turned off in the core worked out well for me.

Yes. I had the exact same issued.

Disabled subdomain and now it works perfectly fine.
