sorry guys.. hard for a lot of people to understand here.. but i don't usually work for free..
development of this module was sponsored by a client of mine.. i hope they will be switching over to Drupal 6 at some point.. but we run some very huge Drupal sites with almost 180 different modules; a lot required for them to decide to switch these over to Drupal 6.. and i can't do this work unfunded.
hopefully someone can take this task.. i mean i have already done the hard part.. :). in which case i would certainly add the port as a release for this project.

Is it correct that this module is built on top of the Diff module? If so, would it make more sense to merge the projects, or at least make it dependant on Diff to reduce code duplication?

it originally spawned from the diff module but diff owner (Moshe maybe??) didn't want to merge the 2 so i contributed as separate module.
I think that the inline diff functionality is now part of the Dr6 version of the diff module as mentioned here: http://drupal.org/node/434438 - so marking this issue as closed.
