I checked this out http://drupal.org/node/291129 for v6.0
but is there a fix for 5.x-1.2?

xanoIt looks more like a DB issue. Are you sure your database's character encoding is UTF-8?
jupiterchild commentedLooks as though it is the encoding.
Over the last few days I had to re-install my database from a backup using 'bigdump'. Then I upgraded to Drupal 5.10. It looks as though somwhere along the way the encoding has changed, though it seems to be only affecting taxonomy though I had not noticed this until I checked out your suggestions.
I have had a look at the database but cannot immediately see where the problem is, anyway thanks for your help, I will now try and find the problem.

jupiterchild commentedCould not see the problem so I rolled the database back a couple of days and the problem is gone.
You can close this issue.
