By latte on

I just added a new roll that I want to be the default if someone signs up and I cannot find a way to set that as the default. It is very strange, I could have sworn I saw it somewhere before.

Any help would be appreciated.

You could try http://drupal.org/project/autoassignrole

But why don't you simply use the "authenticated user" role and give it whatever permissions you want?
