The Onion is a high traffic US humor site, with parody on just about everything. The humor is often off color, since it is intended for 18 and older. Recently, they moved to Drupal. Here is a humorous post by the editor Phineas Zwiebel on the move.

P.S. Thanks to philipk for pointing this out in another thread about evolt.org moving to Drupal.

Here is a previous post on The Onion moving to Drupal.

We have heard from the theme designers, who did a pretty unique layout.

However, we did not hear from the programmers. Specifically, we would like to know the following:

1. What criteria you wanted for CMS? Why Drupal? What other options did you consider?

2. What was the strategy in converting old content? Any reusable code that could make it easier for other sites to move static content to Drupal?

3. What modules are you using? We know Pagination and Email This Page. What else?

4. What is your volume like? Did you use caching?

5. Any other thoughts?

It would make a really interesting case study for Drupal.

would be nice to know who did this. the theme is well done and matches the old one, the site is looking very good and fast. so details -if they can be disclose- on who did what are usefull for other parties wanting to migrate as well.

seems like the theme creators put some details online.

btw: theonion is a real good site I have been following for years. funny stuf goes drupal. extreem cool showcase site.
