I don't know that anyone is already doing this, so have at it :)

The D6 version is still evolving, so it is possible some strings will change, but I don't anticipate many changes at this point since I'm getting close to an official release.

No problem, I'll create the POT file with the potx module and start working on it, is easy to maintain it after that, don't worry.

I'll add this in, but you can get commit access and commit them yourself. Translators have commit access to all modules. See #307439: French translation (fr.po) for info about some translations being done for the 5.2 branch.
