Would it be possible to expand this past using the forum module? IMHO, I see modules becoming more generic and 'lego-block' like. Doing this could open forum moderation to other content types. Why limit it to just forums?

Thanks

Where would you like to see it go? What is "past" the forum module?

Forums in D6 can contain additional content types, and I have yet to explore what this means for Forum Access...

Instead of attaching moderators to forum containers, attach them to taxonomy terms (or better yet CCK, wishful thinking).

This way you can set up editors, publishers, etc... via taxonomy terms as opposed to limiting the moderators to only forum containers.

That sounds like taxonomy access. We already have a few modules that do that. Why would we need another one?

Maybe, there are so many taxonomy access modules. I was thinking of adding individual users to 'moderate' a taxonomy term.

Look at http://drupal.org/project/tac_lite, I think it does what you want.

I dont mean to be rude, but if TAC or TAC_Lite can do the role of forum access, why have forum access? With all these node access modules, they all seem to cover a lot of ground and seem to duplicate code or implement controlling access in a different way.

You're wasting my time here. Each NA module has its place — pick the one(s) you need and move on.

If you want to control access to forums, then I'd recommend FA, but if you can get the functionality you need from another module, you're welcome to go with that. It's as easy as that.

Like I said, I wasn't trying to be rude, I was simply inquiring where FA fits within all the other NA modules. There are so many choices that it is hard to rap ones head around all of the options. Nevermind, trying to combine NA modules! I was just trying to diplomatically ask where your module fits in to all of this (in how it controls access). I apologize if I offended you.

You did not offend me, no need to apologize.

Node Access is a difficult topic that few people understand. Teaching you one-to-one how it works is clearly beyond what I can do under the title of Forum Access Support. I did however evolve Devel Node Access to expose all the hidden information in the Node Access system. The link and instructions for DNA are displayed when you create an FA issue. If you want to learn, you can.

I was simply inquiring where FA fits within all the other NA modules.

FA does NA for forums. No more and no less. If you want to do NA for forums, then use FA, otherwise don't. What is unclear about this?

I know that there are many other confusing (and even incompatible) options, but you're in the FA queue here, and for forums, the choice is simple and obvious. FA and ACL are well-behaved NA modules, and they will get along with any other well-behaved NA modules, provided that you configure them properly (use DNA to figure this out).

If you can't be bothered to install the logical choice of NA modules for your needs and see for yourself what they do, then you don't know what you're talking about and you're not in a position to discuss expanding, merging, or eliminating modules.

I'm not paid to sell you something or do hand-holding. I spend my spare time doing support for real problems (and informed feature requests) with the clear goal to learn how to improve my modules so that they don't require support. Anything beyond that is a waste of my time.

If you feel that a "How to Select the Right Node Access Modules for My Needs" guide is missing, then build up the knowledge and create it. I'm sure that others will appreciate your work.

Thank you for your well written response. I agree with you that the need for a Node Access book is sorely needed. I will look into FA as well as other NA modules to see which one can fill my need.
