with drupal 5.10.
i created a english node. then i created a chinese translation of this node. but when i check the translation of this chinese node. it still show ''not translated". i have to click select node to select that english node as the translation of this chinese node.

It happens to me too, but only for new content types. Page type and Story type works correctly.
My languages are italian and english.

Are you using panel ? Because there is issue with panel for that problem ...
