single select categories keep default terms when node is edited to use a different term

i have a single select category..with a term set to be the default...however, if the node is edited, and another term is selected from the dropdown, the original term persists with the node!..is there any way to NOT save the original default term along with the new choice on update?
any help greatly appreciated!

What you're describing is NOT the standard behavior - it should be working the way you want.
Do you have other taxonomy-related modules installed? Have you upgraded core or contrib recently?
