I installed 5.x-1.4, then uninstalled it because it started to show up as missing in admin/build/modules. So, I decided to delete the module (manually and all its tables from the database) and start over. Now it will not show up in admin/build/modules. I've tried 5.1.4, 5.1.3, and the 5-dev. Versions which work on other installs.
Any ideas would be great. It's pretty mysterious right now.

doesn't sound like you removed it's entry in the system table of the DB so as far as drupal is concered it may still be there ?

It's not still there. Triple checked. I'm looking in the correct database, too.
Here are some other things I checked (suggested by someone else to me).

* if you're using d5 make sure you're using the d5 version of the module (same is true for d6, you can't mix and match versions)
* check the uninstall tab and make sure you've completely uninstalled the old version of the module
* double check all your directories and make sure a simplenews directory doesn't exist any place else
* completely refresh the browser cache
* clear the cache

If you have any other ideas, I'm open.

Install at sites/all/modules/simplenews
Have you included the simplenews.info file?
