Respecting CCK Defaults

I have read elsewhere in the Mailhandler issue queue about efforts to incorporate CCK fields into nodes created from email, but unfortunately, I don't have the skills to accomplish that on my own.

Is there a way for mailhandler to populate the default values for CCK fields into the nodes it creates from emails. I am thinking specifically of CCK Date fields.
