I am looking to have a similar comment system to Youtube or Digg. I don't need the comment to become unpublished or hidden, but allow users to either gives a thumbs up or thumbs down and show the corresponding total.
Has anyone attempted something like this? I'm really new to PHP and drupal, but I'm willing to do some research if anyone can point me in the right direction.

Sorry for delayed response. I hope you have found the solution you are looking for... I don't believe Kudos is exactly what you are looking to use, unless you have a special twist to your up/down system.
There are some modules that will do this sort of thing out there I know. You might take a look at the various plug-ins to the votingapi...

This module is not quite production ready it seems, but I'm sure there are others out there as well.
