1-I have never designed a website nor do i even understand html.Is drupal for someone like me
2-If Drupal is that powerful and excellent, then why is it free?
3-Where is the best place to start learning the basics drupa?
4-Do i need php technical know-how to be able to design sites with drupal?
5-Does any member know of a RELIABLE drupal video training tutorials on the internet that is affordable and will eventually lay a better foundation for me to understand drupal?

1-I have never designed a website nor do i even understand html.Is drupal for someone like me

It all depends-- are you someone who can install software and are happy with the way it works out-of-the-box or are you particular about exactly specifying how things look and behave? Drupal is fairly easy to install and setup, but the second you want to change the look or behavior you're going to need to manipulate html, css, and/or php. It definitely helps, though, no question.

2-If Drupal is that powerful and excellent, then why is it free?

Do some googling on open source software-- this is not particular to drupal. There's loads of high quality open source software available for free (linux is free also).

3-Where is the best place to start learning the basics drupa?

You can start right here on drupal.org to get a feel for it before spending any money-- go to the documentation tab and start with "getting started". I would also see many of the videos at: http://drupal.org/handbook/customization/videocasts.

4-Do i need php technical know-how to be able to design sites with drupal?

Again, it certainly helps. For theming the php you need to know is pretty basic, but never-the-less it's php.

5-Does any member know of a RELIABLE drupal video training tutorials on the internet that is affordable and will eventually lay a better foundation for me to understand drupal?

Sorry, can't help you with for pay videos, i've not tried them. The only money i spent on drupal training resources was the Pro Drupal Development book-- and it was worth every penny.

You should be able to get an idea of whether or not drupal is something you can handle before spending any money. Install it and test it out, go through the docs and videos here on d.o. Take a look at the admin interface at the Open CMS demo for drupal.

You could take a look at this course, I can't endorse it but its worth looking at - http://drupal.org/Drupal-essential-training-lynda-com

Ubercart imho is a great e-commerce system for Drupal 5, and I have built several sites with it - the documentation is superb and the help forum on the Ubercart site is very good.

I am really very pleased with all your responses.I decided last night that I needed to start learning how to install and configure drupal and went ahead and bought drupal training videos from http://www.pound-investors.com and it is really amazing how easy the guys from the above site is helping people like me to getting started.
I bought their drupal video training course last night and in less than 2hrs,I had my site on successfully on the server without the least problem. The images are very clear and the instructor speaks pure and simple english with a very clear voice.I amjust so happy.
I have been flipping through the training modules and it looks like the guys have their training well organized covering almost many topics. In fact the training materials is a complete project being constructed for learning purposes.
I was really sceptical when i saw this post http://drupal.org/node/314788 in one of the forums but i liked what was said to be covered in the training. So i kept a comment to the publisher of the post before proceeding to place an order. So what else can I say?
Well,I am very happy with the video training and i am recommending www.pound-investors.com to any one without the know-how to design websites with drupal to go ahead and buy the same training materials.Absolutely briliant material. It is quite clear that, the videos are going to help you.
The site I am designing is www.weightloss-uk.net so check back later to see what I am having in stock.

I think what's really amazing the the above post by nattyred has the exact same typographical errors as found all over the pound-investors site.

pound-investors offer no preview to these videos. The only example sites they have are a couple of low end sites using contributed themes - hardly a shining example of professional Drupal dev shop.

The above post reads like the bullshit reviews one sees all over sites like hotscripts.

WorldFallz’s picture

first, that would be "lass" to you.

second, jmburnz seems spot on. I can't believe I wasted 15 minutes on that reply when i could have helped several other genuine posters in the same amount of time.

fool me once shame you...

LoLz ... have to admit .. "A" for effort. I needed a good laugh this morning. That was a good response though :)

Jeff Burnz’s picture

Well, I hope to be proven wrong on this - my bullshit-detector went on high alert though and being one to call a spade a spade...

It rips me if this is really bs, we spend so much time here giving it our all to help newbies find their feet. I get a bit disheartened about this sort of thing.

I'd be impressed if pound-investors would step up and show some of us their vids (at least a preview) - if they're worth it not only will I pay for them I'll match it with a donation to the Drupal Association. I'm a theme developer who also runs 3 news sites and have access to 200k page-views per week & Google News - I'd write them a review if they are really as good as they claim they are.

I mean its not the product I am disputing here, just the way they appear to be marketing it. Just my2cents.

WorldFallz’s picture

My bs detector goes off when a "professional" site 1) creates a poorly worded, poorly punctuated, poorly formatted "business" announcement and 2) the same said "professional" site uses one of the core themes without any effort whatsoever to customize it (not to mention populates it with seemingly off topic news feeds).

You're right-- we've no basis on which to judge the quality of the product, but if the quality of the website is any indication...

There's also the additional problem of being smacked in the face with politically incendiary news posts on the front page of a supposed drupal training site (being an american and in an election cycle atm, I'm having my fill of political bs-- i certainly don't expect it here).

My bad i didn't make the connection between the two =/

I endorse NOT buying anything from these people just for ethics alone. Please let Google find this when some pour soul somehow stumbles over their website.

Small consolation, but I am a newbie who stumbled onto your response and I found it very helpful - so thanks!

This is aweful. This user "ausualsuspect" is still one of the guys that has registered with another user name for the purpose of tryng to fail my business which has failed drastically. What a great failure.Everyone has seen the evidence. It is very clear. What else will you do now?

What the hell is going on here.I am Eileen Pound from www.pound-investors.com .However many thanks to Nattreb for his unbiase endorsement that is based on the Drupal training videos he/she has purchase from us.

To start with,I am a French lady and a fiancee to Wayne Pound and we live in London.I have been with Wayne Pound for two years and we are a happy family.I am into my second year of learning English equally.

The content on Pound-Investors.com is written by a french guy with whom I collaborate as a partner though he has become very busy same as i do and we look forward to editing the site as soon as time permits. At least we have something in common and that being;we are both French speaking citizens.

I am a student and studying web design which includes open source projects,PHP,CSS and XHTML etc.

Having to learn English language as a starter within two years of being in England and to be able to communicate efficiently in English without errors is far from the reality.Maybe in three to five years time,my English will be more efficient and even proper than that of some of you whose first language is English. Some other person did also advice here http://pound-investors.com/en/node/207#comment-29 about the language typhos. But yet this said person is happy with the material.

I personally trained my fiancee to understand drupal, create training drupal tutorial screencasts using camtasia during his spare time when he is not at work. This way,the language of instruction can come out naturally and in clear and proper English language.

I see the arguement here is about English Language and the endorsement our training videos for Newbie training is receiving.I presume these negative comments found under this post are purely based on jealousy and some form of what i will call "epidemic of ignorance".

How on earth can someone endorsed a product or disagree about a product they have not used? One commentator says,he does not endorse the "products" on our site for the seek of ethics and so on.Then another one talks about "we" not being ble to offer a preview, and so on.All is bullshit and rubbish.Grammatical errors are part of a language.

What is a blog? A french lady sees it as a medium to publish your mind and thoughts. An "English speaker" says, how come a professional drupal consultant is publishing about irrelevant topics on a drupal base website. How stupid is it to find that an English speaker has no defination of a blog? Well the truth is that,we have fools and idiots in every community and fools and idiots are part of our various communities otherwise life becomes incomplete.

We have many satisfied customers around the world and if anyone here is out to investigate the accuracy of our products, why not create a topic in this forum and request for anyone using our drupal videos to share their experiences and comments. This way,you can have a partial number of people using it and what they think. There are also approximately more than 50 people that we offered our training videos to,for free.

Lastly,Eileen is becoming multi-linguistic and proud for the services I offer. If you want to challenge my language power, why not do it in FRENCH? How many of us are multi-lingual?I bet you that,my English is not bad for someone that never knew anything in English untill two years ago.

The only thing that has been pointed out regarding the English language is the similarity between the content on your site and the comment by Nattreb - the grammatical errors are the same. No one is slamming you for your use of English - only pointing out that the mistakes are very similar.

chadchandler’s picture

So, how did you find this thread? Had to of been on page 3-4 when you mysteriously chimed in. Hilarious.

Eileenpound’s picture

I found the post same as you did.How much has lynda.com library paid you for this dirty job? What a shame to have people like you in the community? How shameful to see lynda.com interrelated in this? You game is up and the world has seen. What else will you do now?The evidence is on written in BOLD letters.

Eileenpound’s picture

I did not realize you guys are inter-conneted and promoting essential training from lynda.com.Do you guys think you are sharpest tools in the box or what? This is absolutely shameful and very disgraceful.I just cannot believe this.I will show how interconnected you are below as i continue.

We all know that research has proven that;when about 85% of non professional internet users are online;they hardly read the content on any particular page, they scan their eyes through the pages and when they type, they do not read over their work except if they were either writing an exam or a job applcation.

So how could you expect nattreb to be different? How beneficial was that to the drupal community? Is that why we are?Are you guys making a fool of your selves? The truth is clear and see it below.

This is a shame to see that a renown online library like lynda.com is getting linked to this type of dirty unprofessional and satanic marketing strategy. To backup what i am saying,
This is a question from the guy from lynda.com to my INITIAL post
http://drupal.org/node/314788#comment-1039220

Right, i think the forum can now see what is going on here. Are these guys not out to mash down my business? Can you all the connection between the dirty marketing tricks lynda.com is applying.
What a shame? How disgraceful is this? Shame to you all.

This is highly entertaining, but still smells like astroturf.

What I love is that they offer copywriting services!

They have more than 90 years of drupal webdesign however, so how can we doubt them?

Thankfully, every single one of their satisfied clients speaks exactly the same dialect as the pound-investor admin, so communication is clearly not a problem. People criticizing their grammar should realize that they are simply catering to their target market!

It would seem that every one of their happy customers has an idiosyncratic problem with their space key also. That's niche marketing!

Here's hoping that pound-investors continue to attract more of the same business they have been getting (since 1996) - no more and no less!

Anyone doubting the genuine nature of the assorted posts can try an IP lookup and see what that tells them. Until then, it would be rude to cast nasturtiums. ;-)

Just hit their tracker, that'll tell you everything - no issues posted, no real help offered, nonsensical answers, no contributions.

You're right about one thing dman, it's certainly entertaining!

chadchandler’s picture

Some people just don't get it. They might of ruined any chance they ever had of becoming successful with this one thread alone.

This thread is front-page worthy on Digg. Hilarious.

I also notice they offer logo-design ... I've tried and tried to replicate their logo in photoshop but it's too tough. Their logo alone, will drive tons of business. l o l z
