Are patches required in order for VFS to work?

Description

It seems that the directions for setting up VFS involve a couple of patches - 146466 and 143888. Are these patches required by VFS, or are they just further performance enhancements? In other words, if I install VFS and do not apply these patches, am I still going to see significant performance improvement over the core search supported by Views?

Also, how come the search_index indexes are created only if the search_node_links table exists? Are the two related? The search_node_links table is created with the 146466 patch.

Same problem here. My views 1.6 is patched with the #218187: Views cache too large, so it's a complete mess to try to implement VFS afterwards.

BTW #302700: What patch to apply? What query to execute? describes well the patches problems but I marked it as duplicate since the current issue links to the concerned patches.

What a pity that d5 dev is stuck... patching again and again makes us lose the compatibility to core devs...

I didn't patch at all, and it seems to work fine. Would appreciate a definitive word on this: whether these patches are indeed considered necessary. (Even though it seems to be working, I'm wondering why!)
