node->path not available on create/send

I was curious if there was a way to make sure or include the node->path into the global $node structure at the time when a newsletter is sent at the same time it is created.

I've added a theme of the footer to place a link into the footer for the node, but if I create and send a newsletter, the node->path is not available. If I create and save the node and then once it's published, send it out, the node->path is there and populates just fine.

I'm not sure why node->path isn't there, because it looks like it should be, but if it is easy, that would be a nice to have to ensure that you can create/send and have that variable populated.
