Taxonomy modules and building taxonomy

Taxonomy...

Building a site where a large taxonomy will have to be inplace before uploading images.

I would appreciate information on must have modules that will help to create, upload and maintain a large taxonomy.

I've DL several, but have spent half the day trying to weed through the information.

The taxonomy will be multi-tiered categories.
