This is generally a network issue. I visited your live site (I'm assuming that is the one you are having trouble with) and I didn't get this error.

I am using FF3 on Ubuntu Linux.

Make sure that your network connection is working correctly (clear your browser cache and reload your web page). It could be that you are having network problems and it is grabbing the web page from your browser cache but is unable to connect to your server using XmlHttpRequest.

Otherwise this is probably not enough information to go on. It may be helpful to know what type of request the AJAX code is trying to make. What module is the Javascript code associated with?

Another simple check you could try is log into the site as admin and look at the status report. Hopefully if any of your modules are incorrectly or incompletely configured it would appear in that report. Not always, of course, but it is a good place to start. Additionally when you find out what request is being made you can check the server access logs to see if the request made it to the server and the error log to see if an error occurred while processing that request.

BTW, the JQuery Javascript code is packed, so all of the jquery javascript code appears on one line. No matter where in the jquery code the problem was, it would report the problem on line 11.

it only appears when i am on the access control page and I want to either move away from it or save a new permission change. And only admins have permission to do this.

Does this have any significant impact?

I will follow your other suggestions.

by the way...i have the same issue.
Some of the admin pages get stucked for a while...sometimes firefox 2 alerts me about it asking to stop it.
I've to say that this is happening on a very big web site with lot of blocks and user roles...but the question remains:
why does it happen on that specific pages?
For me, problem appears in blocks, permissions, modules, not in views for example.
I've a lot of blocks but views as well...
Thanks,
Da.
