I am wondering is there is an easy way to create a content type and have the option to reply to node author via sms while keeping their cell phone number private.

I am super new to Drupal and building a custom module is way above my skill level at this point.

I can use version 5 or 6

There's nothing out of the box.
http://drupal.org/project/smsframework should be of help though.
