At the present I am running two testsites for a little community project.
One of the sites is my development site at home that I access via DYNDNS. That site has got no problems since it is running on a dedicated server with a fast DSL connection.
The other site is beeing hosted by STRATO in Berlin on a virtual server. The URL is: http://www.zooot.de
After testing that for two months I am thinking about changing the provider because the performance of the hosting is just terrible. Even my development server is home (an ASUS eeepc 900 with Ubunto) is about 10times faster especially when I am working in the admin section (running cron jobs, enabling modules...) of the site.
A friend pointed out the Amazon-Cloud as a flexible and powerful hosting service but I have no Idea if that is suitable for a Drupal site (or if I want to spand that much). Another provider I am looking at is Networksolutions.
Has anyone got a good Idea for hosting a site that will eventually be used by people on both sides of the Atlantic?
Paul.

Getting Drupal running on
Getting Drupal running on Amazon's cloud services is pretty complicated and not really supported. I wouldn't recommend it at this point, especially if you're just running a few small sites.
I'd also avoid Network Solutions, they're a notoriously evil company.
Personally, I use AN Hosting. You can check out my review here. They're based in the US, but you should still get decent speed internationally.

AN Hosting
I saw your review and signed up with them but I'm having all sorts of server issues. They're currently trying to balance it out, but so far the hosting has been spotty but their always on top of their customer service.
Will see whether they get it fixed and in the mean time will be considering other hosts.

My web production and development blog. I do Drupal development.
Pair.com is excellent
"Has anyone got a good Idea for hosting a site that will eventually be used by people on both sides of the Atlantic?"
Pair.com is always listed among the very best, and it's true in my experience.
They run FreeBSD on all their servers.
They are somewhat more expensive than the standard "budget" hosts that you see
all over the place, but you do get what you pay for at Pair.com.
They also have a "budget" service called Pairlite but it's only accessible in North America.
I want to set up a low-cost account to run a Drupal test site.
Can anyone recommend a host with similar features and price as Pairlite.com ,
yet accessible from Europe?
Thanks,
gurig
Both Places ...
Hi Paul,
We have customers in the US & Europe. As we are located on the East Coast, our servers are about equidistant (fiber-length wise) from the West Coast of the US and the Western Europe countries.
Most all of our Europe customers (UK, Italy, Germany, Hungary, Switzerland, France) seem to be quite happy with response times to Europe.
We're in a great place if you want traffic to hit both sides of the Atlantic.

Re: Both Places
Hi Steve, I had a look at your site. Being Drupal-centric it looks like an interesting service. Can you post a little more information about what kind of connections you have to the backbone networks? Connectivity providers? Also, I'm really curious about how you are running Drupal: Is it one Drupal install for all on the same server, in other words, do you as the admin do the Drupal patches/updates? One more thing, do you have a Drupal demo running so we can see what kind of loading times we would get as customers?
thanks in advance,
gurig
Hi Gurig, We are in a colo
Hi Gurig,
We are in a colo facility with multiple fiber exit points. We are either directly connected to, or connected via one hop to an upstream, AT&T, Qwest, Charter Communications, and Level 3.
One major upstream link exits our facility and goes a few miles south into a building with direct connections to Charter & AT&T locally, and also dedicated fiber from there heading southeast into a major carrier hotel in Atlanta where various peering agreements are in place.
Another link heads East over to Raleigh, into a facility with direct connections to Level 3 & Qwest (and a few other small carriers)
We don't do the admin on Drupal as we aren't restrictive of what you can run (as long as it doesn't cause problems) which means some customers use D5, some use D6, some experiment with D7. We are one of the few hosts in existence with a commitment in place to currently and in the future support D7. As customers are free to use there own distro and modules of there choosing, it is up to you to install and keep things up to date.
As for some of the other questions you can contact me via the contact form on drupal.org

Some leading web hosting
Some leading web hosting companies in USA can be accessed very quickly by the visitors outsides USA, such as anhosting, bluehost.
It's not necessary to be a company which have sub-division in different continent since they might have different data center in different country. How fast your site can be accessed by people on both sides of Atlantic depends on the infrastructure of the datacenter where your site is hosted.

Thank you for all the advice.
I am presently trying out AN-Hosting with my second site.
I will play around with that for some time and then may try out "HotDrupal.com" for my third website. I had a look and it really loads fast.
Already I can say that AN-Hosting is faster than STRATO (my hosting company in Berlin). At STRATO I have a VPS but as soon as I access any admin pages AN-Hosting just blows STRATO away - STRATO'S SQL must be really slow.
Thanks again for the information - it will be used.
Paul.
