Stars non-functional when added using CCK

The star ratings widget works just fine if I add it using the settings admin/content/node-type/content-type-name page. But this limits where I can place the row of stars on the page.

If I try to add the stars by adding it as a CCK field, the stars show up but they are non-functional. They show up as empty and not click-able when added this way (see attached screenshot).

Any idea what is going on?
