I would like to use the option to activate the account through email verification upon registering. However, in it's current state, the module not only assigns the roles to the user during registration but, it also activates the account in which case the verification email is never sent so the user cannot login.

Sorry if I miscategorized this but, I wasn't sure.

I'm not sure what was causing the issue. Maybe server overload? This problem has seem to disappear on it's own. The roles are successfully being created while at the same time sending the appropriate confirmation/activation email.
