Hey guys,
I have been looking in to the sms modules for 5.x. I am looking to set up something like the simplenews module but rather than a newsletter I am looking to blast sms to users, updating them about thing like school closures, extreme weather, and road closures.
The ideal solution would be for users to use their carriers email gateway so it would be free. They would select the type of update they want, input their number, this in turn would subscribe them to the update. It would also be great if it integrated with their user accounts so they could unsubscribe themselves. Ideally I don't want to have to do anything other then send out the text message.
Is this possible?

This is very do-able using a combination of the Messaging, Notifications, and SMS Framework modules.
SMS Blast by itself does not appear to support segmentation of users by subscription type, but you could accomplish this by creating a node content type for each message type, and allowing the users to subscribe to the message types they were interested in.
