Check http://drupal.org/contribute/documentation to contribute to documentation. Please note that you do not need to be a Documentation Admin to contribute to documentation. You can start edting handbook pages as well as writing new pages now. So create or edit documentation and if you feel that you want the extra responsibility of being a Doc Admin in the future, just say so.

Regarding maintaining... Check http://drupal.org/node/7765 on maintaing modules, themes and installation profiles. Check http://drupal.org/contribute/translations if it's a translation project you're interested in. Good luck!

Graphical documentation for contrib modules - is that a focus anywhere?

Is there any overlap between education and docs drupal groups?

Could such an alliance between groups be forged through a project of some kind?

Also, I would like to know more about being a Doc Admin.

I will be recruiting illustration and translation talent once we can get this going.
