Where does the D5 version of this module stand? Is it usable?

Hm, I really don't know. Did you try it on a test-installation?

Thanks for the quick reply japanitrat! To answer your question, the module was listed on the modules page, and when I attempted to install it I got a positive confirmation message--but there was no sign of functionality anywhere on the site... no generate password button, etc.

This module seems like such an obvious idea, and so light weight... I'm surprised it's not included in core.

Hm yes. Actually I joined this project as co-maintainer for D6. The 5.x release was made by starbow, so maybe he knows what to do.

I am only using the d6 version. But there isn't any UI generated by the d5 version. It just removes the requirement to enter a password on the user creation page (the * disappears), and then, if you leave the password fields empty, you'll see the message "Generated password".
