I would like some feedback on my service_links.module that adds Digg, del.icio.us and Technorati links to nodes.

http://cvs.drupal.org/viewcvs/drupal/contributions/sandbox/frjo/service_...

First I want to have suggestion for a better name :-).

You can see the links "digg | bookmark | cosmos" in action on http://xdeb.org/drupaldev.

Other service to include? Better way to build the links to the services?

TIA

This Sounds Very Cool. I will try it out in the morning and let you know how well it did.

Thanks!

One thing is for sure

You need to write up a readme.txt and install.txt file for the CVS so that people can know how to install this. I put in the module, and selected image style and nothing shows up. Same for if the images are turned off.

So I am not sure how to install this module.

Now there are a readme.txt.

To install create a directory named 'service_links' in your 'modules' directory and copy the module and the images into it, then enable the module at 'administer >> modules'.

For configuration options go to 'administer >> settings >> service_links'. There you can deside where and how the links will show. You can also choose what links to show.

I hope this will make it work for you.

Any idea for a good name for this module?

Should there be one module collecting together a bunch of these kind of links?

Or ...

Should there be 'n' modules, one per web service, that implements the special linking for that web service?

I've been toying with the same general concept but I'm approaching it from the second point of view. I have a google.module and a technorati.module each of which access special features of each service.

then each be updated indivdiually for the feautures of a specific site. On the other hand, is there duplication of code for the functions? If so, then perhaps one core api style module with individual service specific modules bundled in with it.

When installing the module, it seems to show up just fine. But click on the digg link and the url dissapears. I just dugg a story of mine, and when I submitted it, the link to the story dissapeared, and with it any sort of credibility I had with some people there.

The code seems to work so I will make a proper module within a few days.

I still would like to give it a better name, anyone?

interesting

Does this work with aggregator2 links?

That is, instead of sending a link to a node to del.icio.us you send the link from a aggregator2 item?

frjo’s picture

Yes I believe so. Just choose the aggregator2 module node type in the Service links settings.

frjo’s picture

Service links is now a project at http://drupal.org/node/40790.

Maybe one for Furl also?

I don't use Furl my self but if someone submit a patch for the service on the project page at http://drupal.org/node/40790 I will consider it.

pamphile’s picture

How about Declassified.us at http://declassified.us ?

I'm not sure how to post a patch, but but I can modify the code to suite

You can read up on patches here http://drupal.org/node/22568.

Post an issue to the service module project at http://drupal.org/node/add/project_issue/service_links and attach your patch.

You can also simply attach your version of the module, but patches are preferred.

This is exactly what I needed for a new commercial site I'm developing right now.

Many thanks for this neat stuff!

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: node_get_types() in (path)/modules/service_links/service_links.module on line 30

I'm getting this error at (website)/admin/settings/service_links

I'm probably at mid- to low-end of the savvy scale, but I can find my way around PHP. If you can tell what's going on, any suggestions would be appreciated.

I was using the 4.7 version in 4.6. Really, I'm so smart.

I've made a patch
http://drupal.org/node/54379

But i would ask a feature: how can i put these links on a line separated from others (name's blog, read more, and others). In this way i could write a css line for theme.

sorry for my bad english :(, i hope you understand :).

I would also like to separate service_link links to another line, or contained in a ID'd div tag so can I style it. Currently it is not idiot-proof. The links does not communicate to the user these are links you can click on to share this particular article with others. See my particular example at http://www.toultimatefreedom.com/drupal/.

456 Bereat Street blog at www.456bereastreet.com displays these kind of links well. It is at the end of the article, and reads 'Bookmark this at Del.icio.us, Digg or Newsvine.'

Is it possible to separate the service_link links?

Thanks SO much for writing this module. It made a huge difference in me deciding to use Drupal. You're the MAN! (or WoMAN).

desm0n’s picture

Does this help with page ranking and search engines ?

I can't quite grasp yet the benefits of these service links .

Any help appreciated ..

coreb’s picture

It just gives a user the ability to post this article to Digg, del.icio.us, or Technorati easily if they are member of those services. It will help you with del.icio.us because more people can easily add it there bookmarks and give you a better rank to del.icio.us/popular.

I don't know about the rest of them.

MySchizoBuddy’s picture

Is it possible to change the digg part of the module to look like this
http://www.seoegghead.com/blog/seo/how-to-get-dugg-digg-for-wordpress-pl...

MySchizoBuddy’s picture

How do i get it to display under the title of the post, rather than end of node or in links.

frjo’s picture

See "Include service links in your theme" in the README.txt.

MySchizoBuddy’s picture

Yeah I have read the template.php file and don't understand how do i add it to my node.tpl.php
If i use just print $service_links it doesn't do anything. How do i use the code in that template.php file.

PLus any update for Drupal 5.0 yet

frjo’s picture

Did you place the template.php file in the folder of your theme?

A Drupal 5.0 version will be out shortly after Drupal 5.0 are released.

lisar’s picture

I installed this and it appears to be working fine (drupal 4.72). The only problems is that it is showing up on all my nodes and not just the ones I want. I went into settings and selected what content type it should be showing up on, but it seems to be ignoring that. Is it where it's placed in the node.tpl possibly?

Thanks,
Lisa

lisar’s picture

I've got only 2 node content types selected for it to show up on in admin. But it's showing up on all my node content types.

Help:)

Lisa

coreb’s picture

It didn't look like it had an "off switch" for certain nodes. Either all the nodes of a certain type have it, or they don't. I guess we should put in a feature request for selecting which posts to display on.

That said, I haven't updated the module lately b/c the site it's on is being rebuilt. I'll check it later.

coreb’s picture

I added the feature request.

While I was in the process of doing that, I found another relevant feature request w/ patch (show the service links only on nodes of a certain category type) that's been waiting on votes. Go chime in if you feel it's something that should be in the next version.

lisar’s picture

Hi Coreb, thanks for the reply. I wasn't referring to individual nodes, but content types, ie. just in story nodes but not page nodes. Maybe I misunderstand the admin settings, but it seems to me that I can select that option in there,ie. I just selected page nodes, yet it shows up on blog nodes, story nodes, etc. I'll check out the feature request too though.

Thanks,
Lisa

Why did this die? Is there another module that does the same thing?
