I put together a quick two-slide slideshow, and was able to correlate it pretty unequivocally with Firefox spiking its percentage of the CPU resources up to about 97%. Safari also spikes, from about 6% at rest to between 35%-40%. Gory details not really important, because I suspect this is not a views_slideshow issue per se, but more to do with jquery.

Is there some configuration method that works around this? Does anyone know if it happens on FF in Windows, or in IE? (I can't very easily test for this on Windows or Linux.) I'm thinking that there must be a way to get better performance or I wouldn't see jquery-driven slideshows all over the place, so what can I do to improve this?

My client system: FF 3.0.7, Safari 3.2.1, OS X 10.5.6. Caching is enabled, set at several hundred MB.

As I've understood how Image Cache works, it would not help for this situation -- am I misunderstanding that? I would not expect Drupal's caching settings to make a difference because this is clearly a user-agent issue, not a server or network-latency issue.

For discussion, I have generated a very large Views Slideshow with hundreds of images (via imagecache), which highlights a number of interesting issues, including intensive CPU (this issue), long preload time for images, and also the matter of hover pause inadvertently freezing the slideshow (relates to #278401: Hover pause too big issue and disable hover pause option and #222685: Option to not pause on hover and #408210: Ability to switch Hover pause completely off (it has currently a single radio button, not a checkbox)).

I am getting on Mac OS X MacBook Pro (2.5GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) in each of Firefox 3.0.6 and Safari 3.2.1 spikes of 15% CPU relative to base load. This BTW is somewhat less than I was getting on Rotor Banner (#408028: RotorBanner is a CPU hog on both Firefox and Safari.) for about 6 tiny icon images, but still quite a worry.

Am very interested in feedback on this from anybody.

Just checked webels slideshow and got cpu usage mostly about 30% (FF3) and sometimes even over 40%. This issue worries me because I really would like to use slideshow and rotor_banner on my site. Saddly my abbilities don't go over stating the problem as I am a 100%-non code guy. But I would cheer and dance if this could be solved.
Thanks to whoever might solve this issue.

edit: I am on Vista and also tested with IE7 which takes my over 50% regularly.

Bumping to 2.x I can verify the issue on that page. I have tested 50 images and don't have the high cpu usage. Can someone else test in 2.x and verify it works fine.
