The Mime Mail module works well with international characters. I had some problems with titles being encoded wrong with ActiveMailLib.

I am using HTML and the Mime Mail module handles this perfectly. For an example go to:
http://forsker.net/send/167 (here the Mime Mail module is working together with the send module)

Also I think the Mime Mail module will serve as a commom module for many Drupal mail services in the future.

As you can read here, this is on the top of my simplenews todo list (the 'new mail api' I'm referring to is now packaged as mimemail module). So, mimemail module will be used in future versions of simplenews.
