Seems like it would be nice in principle if there were a live site hosted on drupal.org always running the current CVS head.

I wouldn't run it on the same server as drupal.org, or one even related to it considering how the box could be rooted. if it was running on a virtual machine like xen then it might make sense, but i think rather than wasting time doing that stuff, it's just wiser to concentrate on development.

Rather than being
Rather than being antithetical to development, or even a waste of time, I see "eating your own dogfood" as vital to development. Such a server (virtual or not) would allow those that can't get a slightly broken CVS snapshot working to poke at the system and help find problems.
it would certainly prevent
it would certainly prevent this kind of problem: http://drupal.org/node/40563
from staying in CVS for too long.
Actually
I found about that bug from a local test installation. If a few people used and tested it locally, im sure these bugs would appear. It should be safe to use it as a private information store. Basicaly 4.7 is the only usable route for Postgres, without needing some patching, and I think that bug in 4.7 is the last annoyance feature wise.
Live site meaning what exactly?
I think that this is a good idea, but just to be clear, do you mean a demo site with open admin functionality, or just something running (say) a subset of drupal.org, or...?
