I like this and I would even go so far as to suggest that we could improve Casetracker to have a “— Select an item—” option as the default (like other parts of Drupal) that doesn’t validate so you are forced to choose rather than rely on defaults.

I like adding this option to admin/settings/casetracker and letting the site administrator choose to use defaults or not.

I'm cleaning the module issues, so if somebody thinks that this issue does make sense yet, feel free to reopen.

BTW, this is possible in the 2.x branch, as the module is based on Entity Types and Fields, where you can edit the field and change this settings.
