More importantly, the link is only applied to one word rather than the entire title which doesn't look good.

I think the colon in a matter of personal preference. I was treating it like Drupal blocks which do not include that. I did discover some bad code in the links and have committed the fix to CVS HEAD. Please give that a try and let me know if it fixes the other problem for you.
