Issue Summary
I would really like to be able to send different welcome emails based on the role a new user selects.

I second this, I'm trying to do this now. Not sure whether to go down the trigger+action route, but this feature built into Auto Assign Role would be excellent. Thanks.

Isn't it this the same as #267848: custom registration message depending on role ?

I'm not going to write this into the module without additional community support in the form of patches. If you would like to submit patches we can look at getting into the module.
