michelleAdvanced forum has code in it to look in your theme directory for the css files because it's meant to be a complex style system. Author Pane comes with a tiny little CSS file with just a smidge of positioning for people using it outside of AF/APK. I'm not going to add a bunch of complex logic to it. Just use youre theme's style.css file to override the CSS in it if you need to.

Tom777 commentedI cannot make any changes to my Zen sub-theme .css. I've tried designating a different .css file in my .info file (as instructed), and adding files, switching files, and hacking core within the .css folder. (I backed up the core and replaced it, however.) I installed Zen to a midphase Drupal folder, so that the path to my sub-theme is /drupal/sites/all/themes/zen/STARTERKIT/. Everything else seems to work fine using the Drupal admin interface.
A possibly related issue: following instructions on how to get started with Drupal, I created the STARTERKIT folder. I changed the .info file to STARTERKIT.info.text (following the instructions). I could not understand why I would have thus eliminated the file with the extension .info, which it seemed to stress as crucial, so I added another, identical file, STARTERKIT.info. Nothing I have done has resulted in any change to the appearance of the site. One possibility is that my .info file is being ignored, and the site loads the default .css.
Thanks very much for your time.

michelleThis looks like a support request for Zen, so you need to post it here.
