Apparently the default value in the administration page is not working on initalization. Maybe there is a workaround to popup a fake/default dialog.

On field creation should the value be read from the form, not from the field. Nevertheless it's an issue we can live with.

As you can't select a default value with any other CCK widget on field creation, this issue won't be fixed. You have to configure it first before you can use it, which should be fine.
