No one replied on the list, so Im posting this here :

If I create a sub category in 2 languages , the translation module lets me
map the two sub categories (under 'new translation'). What exactly does
this achieve?

If someone posts under english, does it automatically get tagged under the
spanish sub category too? (coz it doesnt work that way for me right now and I want to know if my install is bad).

This version is not supported anymore. No new features for it. Please, consider upgrading.
