I activated the smileys module, configured to be active in chat, but still I can not see a box for selecting smileys from.
If I use something like :-) it is translated do a smiley. Is there no way to click from a smiley select-box.

this is fixed in the 6.x-2 branch, where chats now use whatever filter is configured for the chat node. if smileys are enabled and setup as part of the filter, it will just work.
