In the latest Dev version (From 4/30/09), when using an optional date filter on a node View, there are no results displayed by default. It does work perfectly when dates are provided or not provided, but only as long as the the Apply 'button' is pressed. i.e. in order to the unfiltered results, you need to hit the 'Apply' button. Then, if the optional date field is removed, all of the results show up.
