I was wondering is there a way I can make the drupal website membership by invitation only
is there a module or some settings that I can use to make this happen.

The invite module is good, although I haven't looked at GoJoinGo, so I can't venture an opinion.

Yeah. I agree vikram and wil keep you posted on anything I come across.

"invite only" marketing is going to increase this year me thinks, especially with community development.

You would imagine that it would curb the growth of a community, but, in fact - if it's done right - it not only increases membership but members value their membership more.

I know many people begging for a gmail account at the mo. Despite their offering being beta and not much to shout about.

Yeah you are right and i have seen some forums doing it too
like this one www.desitorrents.com it is membership only forums and i like the they work.
you can only be a member once a member send you the invitation.

the Invite module works really well for the type of model you are looking for. You can switch off site sign up so the only way to get access is via a referal from an existing site member, and you can also upgrade the role that they are assigned when they join, so you can jump the 'authenticated user' default role.

Thanks for reminding me about this. I had half a mind to turn off the module because I wanted something like this.

It is still manual, but that's okay, I guess.

Yes it works well for this. I didn't like to show 'authenticated users' in the members listing, and also I wanted to discourage spammers. If they can easily sign up to a site spammers will take advantage and start posting, however if access is only via email invite then the users signing on are unlikely to be spammers. Ie Someone you trust, that you invite, is not likely to then send an invite to an anonymous spammer.... :-)

how can i switch the site login off and if i will switch the site login then how come the poeople i will invite to the website will be able to sign in and also how i will be able to find the login box to sign in as admin of the website can you please help !

Vikram,

If I remember right, the invite email will have a link and clicking on that will take the user to the login page etc. So, you won't have a problem even if you turn off the login blocks.

but if I switch off the login then me as a admin how can I sign in and also once the user is registered. where will they go to sign in the next time they will come to the website to login that is my main concern I don't want the users to be looking for the link again and again whenever they have to login.
I don't want to be a pain or anything but I just to make sure the users on my website should get the easiest way to signin once they are registered with my website

is there a way to take the register with us link out of the login box I m mean an easy and simple way coz I m not a php pro or anything like that.

I want you guys advice who knw drupal a lot better then I do.

You can always login at www.yourdomain.com/user/login (if you are using clean urls) and at www.yourdomain.com/?q=user/login, if you are not using clean urls.

For your users, you can put a simple link in the header section of your theme (most themes provide a place for defining primary and secondary links). Or, you can even create a menu and make this (user/login) a menu item.

that is a nice idea but when the user gona click on the login link .......... they will get the option to register too there by default but if some how I can stop the register option then I think the website will be entirely by invitation only

if any one think differently then please let me know ... or if anyone have any advise on how to get rid of the register option which comes up by default..

Are you sure?

The 'register' tab will not appear on the user/login page once you have turned off the registration options at administer>>user>>configure

Hey fellows ....

so finally i tried the invite module .... and i havea good news and a bad news and i think i should start with a good news

GOOD NEWS = the invite module is nice ,easy to install and easy to use but one problem you can entirely turn off the registration process you have to choose the register on approval by the admin..that mean anyone without the invite can also register and i dont think so there is anything a admin can check if the user had a invite or user didnt have a invite code while registering ....

BAD NEWS = i m still not been able to make my website by Invitation only...

hey but this dont mean this is the end i think there will be people at drupal or druplers who will help us out ... how to do it ...
till then please keep dropping in the suggestion and the info abt this topic and i will goin to check out the GOJOINGO MODULE...

Vikram, I have trouble understanding what you mean. The invite module works when the option is for users to create accounts but with admin approval. It doesn't mean that users without the invite can also register. When you combine the invite module with turning off the user login block, people can register only through invites.

Let me know if I am missing something.

ok what i meant was once you combine the invite module with the admin approval register right ... anyone can register without the invite code too like i did on my website ... and the request goes to the admin that user wants to register but it donest tell the admin that is the user has a invite or no ... this is what happened with me or tell me if i missed something while making the invite module work ......

I am going to bring this post back, because I would like to see this happen to. You would think there would be a module that would do this already, similar to how Gmail handles it. I would like it if the module would have a limited number of invites per month or something.

This gives me an idea. Would it be possible to integrate the referral module into the invite module? That way, when users send out invites, the new users have to put in the personal referral code to join. If that referral code wa sinvalid, they can't sign up. Possible? I don't know PHP, so I can't help much, sorry.

Hi, this is an older forum topic, but since I didn't see taxonomy_access mentioned, here is:

Taxonomy Access Control completely and efficiently provides private-side for web sites, including member-only forums alongside public forums.

Once installed, you can assign each role, such as "authenticated user," "full member," "maintainer," etc. privileges based on taxonomy vocabulary and term.

First, down load and install the taxonomy_access module, and enable at (administer > site building > modules). It works with the Taxonomy module. Taxonomy is built in to Drupal. Enable this core module if you haven't already.

Then, set up taxonomies, or categories. Go to taxonomy: (administer > content management > Categories)

I set up a vocabulary called "web pages" and allow node types "Book pages" and "Pages" to be assigned terms in this taxonomy.

Another vocabulary could be "News" for node types "Blog entries" and "Stories."

Then assign terms to each of these vocabularies. In my case, only limited content is publicly available, so for pages I used terms like: miscellaneous, contact info, help, links, public. And you could set terms for "News" like: hot, current, archive.

Forums have taxonomy terms built-in: The vocabulary is titled "Forum" and the different forum boards are each a term in the vocabulary.

Set permissions: (administer > user management > access control) is the built-in access. Make sure both "authenticated users" and "anonymous users" have node module > access content privileges.

The power control is at (administer > user management > taxonomy access permissions). Here you specify actions each role has permission to do (view, update, delete, create, list) for each taxonomy term!

For the "anonymous user" role, you can allow them to view which nodes (by vocabulary term) they can view, eg: "web pages" with terms "contact info," "links," and "public." For the "forum" vocabulary, the "help" and "public" boards. For the "news" vocabulary, only "hot" stories.

For the "authenticated user" role allow posting (not just viewing) in the "help" and "public" forum boards.

For the "full member" role, add all the paid content.

For the "moderator" role, you can let them see the "removed threads" forum board, and give them permissions to maintain the boards.

For the "maintainer" role, you can give them permission to edit pages and create new ones (but not edit member posts in the forums).

For the "reporter" role, you can give them permission to create "story" nodes and "blog" nodes, and edit their own.

For the "editor" role, you can give them permission to edit all "story" nodes, and adjust them from "hot," "current," or "archive."

Hopefully that gives the idea. You could also set up your site to give your customers access to the private side of your company web site while maintaining the marketing pages open to everyone.

There is probably a way to use the workflow module to automatically assign all these Taxonomy Access permissions, but I don't have that need yet. I keep a few "public" pages available for those who come surfing by, but have the bulk of the site behind the "authenticated user" role.
