It would be nice to be able to set a help text to explain to the end user (voter) what to do. This could be set in the content type edit page and displayed above the poll.

Interesting idea. What should the help text cover and/or clarify?

Well for my site, the content type name isn't displayed on the actual node. Therefore it's not obvious on something like ranking poll what to do. For me it would just say "Rank these choices in the order of your preference".
