This can be better handled by the Weight module module.

In another issue you mentioned goal of making the interface as close to Drupal core as possible. That's what this is about. In 6.x-2.x we took a major step to standard node handling for Web Links so that other modules can act on links just like they do with any other node. With our internal weight handling, we "hide" that from other modules unless they are specifically Weblinks-aware.

However, when I get back to this, I will see if I can allow both features to coexist for a while. Actually, I know it mostly works, because I have been doing it; it's just not pretty right now.

Yea this one makes me nervous I agree the closer to core we get the better but there are times when you have to enhance something missing from core and I think this is one of them.
