Until such time that an effective way exists to geographically list Drupal users and developers from around the world, I'm borrowing from the ideas posted at http://drupal.org/node/46557 and http://drupal.org/node/46439.

The whole purpose is to easily find other Drupal users and developers in any part of the world.

http://www.frappr.com/drupalusers ("DrupalUsers") is a map of Drupal users' locations from around the world, so please join us by adding your geographical location. Be sure to "Shoutout a message" and, in it, please include a link to your drupal.org account (example: drupal.org/user/15083).

If you are ALSO a Drupal developer, please ALSO add yourself to http://www.frappr.com/drupaldevs.

Thanks,
Walt

I like the concept of GeoURL alot.

Add your geographic location on your website and geourl will find other websites around yours ;)

Everyone should do it ...

To see an example of "Put a Frappr minimap on your own website!" in action, please visit http://www.civicactions.com and scroll towards the bottom of the right-hand column to where a logo asks, "Where are we? Click here for our map. Powered by Frappr."

You'll then be taken to http://www.frappr.com/civicactions.

Pretty cool, huh?!

I have a test installation of Drupal 4.6.5 on Bluehost.
Can someone direct me to instructions on installing the 4.7 rc3 upgrade? My earlier attempts failed, even when I updated settings.
I should add that I am in Vermont and operate http://www.youngwritersproject.org
Am beginning development of replacement site and have zeroed in on Drupal as best CMS for what I am doing. Am a neophyte and a bit lost in the woods, as they say, but am pushing on ahead. I see great potential of 4.7 for folks like me.
Any thoughts, help would be most appreciated. This is a non-profit effort done, at the moment, in my spare time.
thanks
geoff

The instructions to install Drupal really are quite plentiful and there are even podcasts on how to install Drupal.

But you need to take the first step and look for them.

If you still can't find them, come back, post what you did to search for them, and I'll see if I can add further comments.

Walt,
Thanks very much for the help. For some reason I was having trouble finding the installation instructions but finally found them. Essentially I was looking for what files to preserve from the old version to reload in the new.
I did that and have had a successful time of it. The 4.7 version is working well for the most part....

Being a relative newcomer to this world, I hope you forgive me....I've got a few issues and questions I'd love help with...

Just as a FYI, I operate a non-profit organization (in my basement) that works to help kids learn to write better. We are a collaboration of professional writers, teachers, students, journalists and newspapers. I developed the present site off HTML; it works fine but needs to be much more dynamic. I am now working on the next generation site for this fall. I've learned a lot about Drupal and like it. Now I am doing the trial and error method which, I find, is not a bad way to learn, but it is slow to be sure.

I've managed to load up the Drupal 4.7 and have gotten it working well and looking pretty good. (Thanks to Walt for helping me find some installation info I needed.)

1) I am finding that with 4.7 a number of modules can't be configured...I get an error message when I attempt to do so. For instance, here's one I got when I tried to establish settings for Acidfree:....Fatal error: Call to undefined function: form_select() in /home/youngwri/public_html/drupal/modules/acidfree/acidfree.module on line 295...
The same thing has with SUBMISSIONS, Gallery, poormanscron and a few others....

I'm not sure this is the right place to ask, but is this something that is because 4.7 is in scheduled release level and is not formally released and these modules haven't been modified yet? Or are there some fixes out there I can try?

Two other questions:

2) Is there a way to set up a more complex permission system that would allow me to define multiple levels of users who were given multiple levels of entry into the site?

3) And are their modules that improve the forums -- so far I get the sense that Drupal's forum modules (even in 4.7) are rather simplistic; I have been trying out phpBB and like the level of privacy/protection, etc in that program. I need to be particularly sensitive given that I have kids of all ages coming to the site.

Any help out there would be appreciated.

Geoffrey,

I'm not sure if you've already found/received answers to your post, but I noticed you don't have any replies here.

Your comments here are misplaced as the original post here is about "Drupal users and developers by geographical location." Your post has nothing to do with that.

If you still need help with your issues, please search for answers by conducting a "search" as well as by visiting the helpful "Support" and "Handbooks" pages.

If, after that, you still need help, I would suggest that you visit the forum area and find the appropriate sub-forum(s) to post your issues. If your questions are distinct, then post them separately as opposed to one big rambling post that contains questions on various unrelated issues. Also, if you have bugs, please report them by visiting "Support."

I think you'll have a much better chance of obtaining help if you can find the most appropriate spot to post issues. Good luck!

By the way, thanks for your work with The Young Writers Project.

Walt,
Thanks for your kind response. You are quite right. It is taking me a while but I am learning... specific questions directed in specific areas...
I have, actually, found answers to most of my questions. I should have realized but didn't that some of the modules I was loading were not in fact 4.7 ready.... Some have now been fixed.
Regarding permissions, I have found a way to set those up differently depending on the content.
And as to forums, I needed to build a forum quickly that also could withstand potential idiots (spammers, et al) and so latched onto vbulletin which I had a friend test until he was blue. We are going live with the moderated forum next week which is going to be devoted to teens and their lives...should be interesting.
Anyway, it was nice of you to respond. And it was nice of you and others to be so patient. I was turned onto Drupal by a woman who runs the New Zealand Idol blog site and I think it's an excellent product. So I am sticking with it and learning as much as I can as I go. When I'm finally ready, I'll convert my existing site over to it.
And I will definitely heed your advice of seeking out the appropriate forums.
Thanks again

Walt,
I found this page after you replied to one of my posts re: event workflow.

Just thought you'd like to know that the functionality you want with the Frappr map can now be done with a Drupal site.

Gmap has come on leaps and bounds, couple that with the Views module and location module, that sort of a map can be created.
Have a look here:

Alan,

Thanks for the info! I deleted the Frappr info from my signature and posted a comment on groups.drupal.org.

Once I get a reply, I'll then post info at the DrupalUsers map on Frappr that the map is being "relocated" to wherever the powers that be at groups.drupal.org decide is best.

Thanks,
Walt
