Is this module now abandoned?

Description

Few weeks ago lashad came forward as new maintainer of the module and the ownership was transferrred to him. But Since then there is no comment/note/update from the new maintainer. So looks the new maintainer is no longer interested in drigg, effctively abandoning the module. Am I correct?

looks like.. the official 6.x version hasn't been released since Nov 08. There is not going to be any further features developed for this module and drupal 7 version is probably never going to come out. For anyone who is interested in something of this sort should start looking at the vote up/down module http://drupal.org/project/vote_up_down and I guess at some point drigg will be deprecated in favor of that module.

Hi,

The new maintainer disappeared. They looked very promising. How disappointing.
What can I say?

Merc.

alliax - May 22, 2009 - 00:34

You can say the truth about this new maintainer who didn't do a thing, they should be ashamed, they never said anything in here or on drigg-code.com forums. This is really disappointing.
I don't understand why no developper is interested in developping drigg further, what is their problem, lack of time of course, but they have time to develop other modules, and one could have stepped up to improve drigg as a summer of code project.

I don't know why.

drupallogic - May 22, 2009 - 12:32

I believe Drupal management should consider putting a hand on this module as there are so many people out there looking for a Digg-clone script.

#5

ajayg - May 22, 2009 - 16:32

By "drupal management" you mean core team, then I don't agree with you comment. There are several issues that core need to address, from resource point of view, they should not dabble in contrbuted module. I think it is like marketplace. If there is enough support and interest the modules survives if not it would die. If there is enough interest, why no one is coming forward? perhaps they are afraid they will not get anything out of it. If we need something happens to drigg module we need to come up with ways to support it.

#6

kdes - May 25, 2009 - 16:59

maybe if there are enough members who can contribute, drigg could get a paid maintainer.

#7

drupallogic - May 25, 2009 - 21:59

I didn't say core team should maintain the module. I'm sure they can persuade someone to be the mainter of this module. Sometimes works need a little push so they can move on. if not they die! just like happened in the history!

Hi,

I am keeping an eye on this thread, and will try to work something out so that Drigg gets a new maintainer.
Sorry about this guys. I had no idea this was happening...

Merc.

#9

ajayg - May 28, 2009 - 04:20

Merc,
while you are finding new maintainer, could you please atleast commit the patches already reviewed and tested by community? SO we can continue to make progress, whatever slow pace it may be.

#10

mercmobily - May 29, 2009 - 10:06

Hi,

I don't even have the code checked out right now, and don't have a computer to do it.
Is anybody here familiar with CVS?

Ah, I actually can't. I don't have writing access I don't think...

Merc.

#11

ajayg - May 29, 2009 - 18:09

Merc, as mentioned here (http://drupal.org/node/421476) you should have correct CVS access.

yeeloon - May 30, 2009 - 06:11

Hi Merc,

It would be great if you can take back drigg and bring it to the next level, since you've done a great job previously. Felt it's a shame if this is left to rot... I'm sure all of us would like to a more improved drigg.

Cheers,
yeeloon

I wholeheartedly agree, because if this project fades out, my project will probable fade out as well.

#14

wwwoliondorcom - May 31, 2009 - 10:32

Hi,

You all would like that Merc works on this project but who is ready to chip in ?

We should just start chiping in and hope !

But i dont think that saying "you should finish this project..." would bring us any further...

Thanks for listening !

mercmobily - June 2, 2009 - 12:54

Hi,

Screw this.
Don't worry about the money, I cannot bear seeing such a community, hard work (mine but more importantly yours), and great software being abandoned like that.

I am back developing Drigg.

I will set up my development machine tomorrow, get the CVS tree back, etc. I will need a little bit of guidance, guys, because -- terrifying thought -- I can't even remember the codebase properly. I haven't touched the code in month. You know better than me which patches are ready to go, what works, what doesn't, etc.

The next step is to make me an administrator again. Can you please help me make this happen? Please notify the infrastructure guys of this:

http://drupal.org/node/479662

Thanks a lot,

Merc.

That's so great thank you!!!
100% DRIGG, 0% PLIGG !!!

Merc is back, Hip Hip Hooray !!!

Let's buy booze and get drunk ;-)

DRIGG 1 point - Pligg 0 point !

Hi,

Luckily chx was great and actually checked what the situation was, rather than redirect me to the "what to do with abandoned projects" page.

Thanks CHX.

Well I guess the issue is solved, now that I am back on board.

AS I said, I will need quite a bit of help to sort things out. I want to get to the point where it has 0 bugs, and all feature requests. So, lets' get the bugs sorted out.

Merc.

Hi,

Well, setting it as active again... since User Karma is a VERY important dependency, and I am not really willing to work on it if the current 'maintainer' is the same person who let Drig rot for months.

Bye,

Merc.

Marking this fix as mercmobily is now owner of user_karma and drigg

#23

Hi,

Thank you guys.
Please chip in in the current plan for Drigg... It's probably the most important issue right now!

Sorry to bring this up again. But would like to know if this module is abandoned?

With all fairness to Merc, he was in hospital for several days so do not expect him to be back and contributing.

There seems to be growing usage of this module with some commercial interest (which is great). However somehow there is still not enough developer support or community to help this out or work with Merc. So giving a call for all those who may be interested to contribute and see if we can get 6.x released.

#26

alliax - August 21, 2009 - 01:46

Yes, it would be nice to have a stable release, but honestly I have a site in production with Drigg6 and it's fine!
What more should we ask for in terms of features or bug fixes?

#27

wwwoliondorcom - August 22, 2009 - 12:47

I agree that we should help, but as it seems that most Drupal and Drigg users are stingy persons who just want to take advantage of developers work without contributing by any way, there is no chance to go further ! I give up !

#28

alliax - August 22, 2009 - 23:29

What are you talking about? What kind of help have you given to drigg???

#29

ajayg - August 23, 2009 - 05:38

There will be always some people who would like to but won't be able to help and some who can help but won't for various reason. Instead of wasting our energy discussing why and who is not helping, how about we discussing what we can help.

As I have helped in the past, I would like to help with testing and submitting to issue queue. Occasionaly I had courage to submit very tiny patches but I am not a developer.

Anyone wants to help drigg (and help yourself in the process)?

#30

feconroses - August 25, 2009 - 23:52

I agree 100% with ajayg.

Like ayayg im not a developer, but i can help with testing, submitting to issue queue and translating to spanish!

#31

wwwoliondorcom - August 26, 2009 - 11:31

What MERC needs is your money, testing everybody can do it !

Thanks.

#32

ajayg - August 27, 2009 - 06:16

For new features I can understand. I am trying to atleast ralley support for patches already submitted by community to be commited and R6 released. Slow start but atleast a start.

#33

feconroses - September 23, 2009 - 22:50

Any news? This wonderful module seems abandoned right now :(

#36

Any news ?

#37

alliax - October 6, 2009 - 12:48

Merc contacted someone at the start of october saying he's back to normal health and plan on taking things back where they were in june. So Drigg is not dead at all, it's just sleeping, but already working and used in production.

#38

Chrys - October 6, 2009 - 12:52

All the best to merc :)

Merc's health (and anyone's health) is much much important than any software

#39

ajayg - October 6, 2009 - 15:21

Merc communicated by email with me and looking for development help. If anyone of you developer out there willing to help please get in touch with Merc.
