Popups API conflicts with Hierarchical Select module

using the most recent dev version of hierarchical select, node creation forms in a modal dialog take a long time to load, and then throw a "too much recursion" error in Firefox. IE has a memory error alert. disabling HS makes them work snappily again.

i think the problem is happening in Popups.attach somewhere, perhaps some kind of namespace conflict? i'm going to try and dig deeper.
