As new maintainer, I regret to say that there will be no work on on my part on a port to Drupal 6. However, if anyone else want to have a go at this, I will be happy to sign her or him up as co-maintainer. (However, since it is not likely that this will happen, I'm closing the issue. But anyone that want to take the job to port and maintain a Drupal 6 version are welcome to contact me.)
Please note that Drupal 8 is now on its way, and Drupal 6 will probably become officially unsupported when Drupal 8 is released.
For those looking for a Drupal 6 solution, there is Authoring aliases, which has a full Drupal 6 release. It is, however, tagged as "unsupported".
