We are looking into dedicated hosting. (most importantly for security reasons). I'm looking at node 44173 which mentions site5 (automatic upgrade if slashdotted), and highland. We'd be interested to hear about these and additional companies people has used, and liked or not liked. one person didn't recommend sevage because it lacked shell access. We do want shell access. If you could share info regarding traffic volume, RAM, and prices at that volume and other relevant info such as response time and expertise of customer service, that would be appreciated. Thank you.

We are also considering self-hosting.

How much budget and staff time would that require initially and monthly? (Just to maintain the servers, not the Drupal code) How much training would a C programmer need to set up and maintain servers? would 2 or 3 weeks be enough?

(again, security would be the reason we go this route.)

On the one hand, there is the argument that a professional hosting firm would have more expertise with keeping the info secure. On the other hand, we have screened our employees to our standards.

i also read 37332, which mentions lunarpages at $100/mo for Intel Celeron 2.0GHz, 512mB memory, $150/mo for Pentium CPU and 1 gig memory.

siteground vps hosting $89/mo, $49 setup

39427 cpu usage; upset hosts

49365. unixshell.
dakotahosting ($40/mo) it's unmanaged

the data is confidential, and if stolen could lead to identity theft and other problems.

Places like Rimu Hosting offer good prices and support.

Rimu uses Xen for their virtualisation - no real security worries with Xen.

Anton,
thank you very much. I didn't know about VPS. For those who don't know, it means you have your own copy of Apache installed. this also improves performance. westhost has a plan starting at $4! Are you using rimu?

styro’s picture

We actually have our servers inhouse, but I am looking into Rimu for a backup DNS/SMTP solution. So we don't actually use them yet.

With a Xen virtual host, you can basically get a base Debian install to yourself that you can do whatever you like with except for stuff like replacing the kernel or setting the system time etc. We have used Xen internally for virtual development servers and it works well.

Rimu have a very good support and customer service reputation though, and can even offer good support for your own installed apps like Apache, BIND, Tomcat etc.

If you can afford it, a dedicated server is still better in most cases. But virtual servers are a nice middle ground between shared hosting and a dedicated server.

searching on vps, i found node 49365. It's an interesting discussion of vps, but does not mention too many hosts by name.

I am using RimuHosting and I am quite happy. When I was looking for a VPS it was down to UnixShell and RimuHosting. I chose Rimu because they were using Xen which is supposedly faster than other virtualizatin software like UML. There aren't too many VPS hosting around. You can also check linode.com.

I also asked a similar question about self-hosting and using a virtual private server (dedicated is too expensive for me) a while ago and then decided VPS was the best option for me:

FYI, UnixShell has been using Xen for quite some time. (I have a VPS instance running on one of their boxes under Xen)

i just got off the phone with westhost

vps starting at $4 and up
24/7 tollfree tech support
install php and mysql via control panel
no managed vps
data servers in utah (no redundancy)
no free backups
dedicated at $150 and up
vps servers have 4GB of RAM
dedicated servers have 512k RAM, upgrade to 1GB for $23/mo
running redhat and spyra.
about 99.0% uptime, so higher downtime than others.
