Img_assist can be really slow when adding multiple images to a page. Integration with google gears could speed this up by saving on pop-up/page loads.

There's already http://drupal.org/project/gears, which I haven't really looked at.

That won't speed it up, because it needs to query data/forms from the server. However, we will resolve that differently soon.
