I downloaded Project, and installed it on a test site. Looking at the files (Views handlers), I noticed there is a file with extension ".inc0000644" (the complete name is "project_release_handler_relationship_project_project_release_node.inc0000644").

Is that caused by the application I am using to decompress the files, or that is the real name of the file?

I was finally able to find the CVS branch that is associated with version 6.x-1.x-dev. There isn't a file with such extension; therefore, it is a problem with the application I use to decompress the tarball archives.
