Need a good theme but can't find any. HELP!

startuplab - August 10, 2009 - 01:06

started out building my site which can be viewed here (www.startuplab.net) using a free drupal theme. but it's just not going to cut it and i can't find any other good themes out there. i've searched far and wide and even looked at all of the premium theme sites. why aren't there any good ones available?

good is subjectve. If you want a theme you cosider good. create a mockup and send it to someone or create a theme from it.

define what you deem "good" and forum support can guide you better toward something you may use to attain thy themeing desires.

'Good' is a terribly subjective value - and Drupal can be customised to the n'th degree...

The options are -

  • Learn how to create a theme yourself, or
  • Get someone else to do it.

The look, the navigability, and the content of the site are what counts; and the theming comes a definite second to the navigability.

It depends,

are you ready to buy some, or to continue to use free themes. Good resource for Drupal themes is

Do you need pretty or valid or what?

Looking through the nearly 400 free themes at http://d-theme.com/cdmug, mostly themes from drupal.org, there are more choices and ideas than I need for my 100+ sites. Then allow for many of the themes using the color module for many more variations. Yes there are a hundred that look like Garland. There is also http://d-theme.com/cdmug that looks ordinary until you visit it several times across the day and night. http://d-theme.com/abeesparadise looks not like Garland. http://d-theme.com/absynthe, http://d-theme.com/coolweb... Express your feminie side with http://d-theme.com/doufertility. Go green with http://d-theme.com/earth_birthday.

First look for accessible themes validated to WCAG A or AA then go for different.

thanks all, i appreciate the input. i'm about ready to give up and pony up for one...can't find one i like. not sure if i like any at top notch either. anyone on here build themes? don't have a ton to spend, but if anyone is interested let me know. my site is startuplab.net

Have you seen parts you like?

peterx - August 12, 2009 - 02:23

Creating a theme remote from the user is a pain. Face to face usually involves a back and forth discussion. What do you use in print? What do you use when you present? What parts of existing themes and sites excite you? If not a theme or site, what about a movie poster, book cover, magazine advert? Why?

Do you have to suck up to corporates?

My business is brand new.

startuplab - August 12, 2009 - 02:30

My business is brand new. Not even off the ground yet, so no print, etc. Brandbucket.com is a site that i saw that does something similar to what my business plan entails, albeit a bit different, but i do like their layout. I want something clean, but something that's not too bland with a design edge.

We create beautiful Drupal themes for companies all over the world, every day. We might ask them what their current branding is but we're far more concerned with discussions about future branding, target audience, market positioning and the purpose and content of the site - design is about understanding the design problems and solving them, its does not matter if you're separated by a desk, telephone line or the Atlantic ocean. We very seldom ask them what they like (although this is often volunteered) as this can often lead to weak or biased design decisions, we concentrate on the design problems and solving them first.

This is straying into 'paid Drupal services' territory...

Themes aren't difficult to build- see http://mongolia.charityrallies.org/ and a sketch at http://africa.charityrallies.org/

You need to be very clear about what you want - a wireframe or PhotoShop mockup (I use the Gimp - http://gimp.org) is always useful.
