I'm starting to think about SWF Tools 7, and might even make a start on it!

I have some ideas for bits of SWF Tools I want to overhaul as part of the upgrade, but to help shape the new module I'd appreciate some input from people who are using the modules.

There are a number of ways you can help:

  • What features would you like to see improved?
  • What features would you like to see added?
  • Any performance issues that need addressing?
  • Your favorite "must keep at all costs" features?

One area in particular I'd like some help is understanding which of the many embedding and player modules are actually used. For example, I plan to target JW and FlowPlayer first, but I'm never quite sure how heavily the slideshow capabilities are used.

I also have some thoughts about separating the basic "put some flash on a page" aspects in to a lighter module as I appreciate that some users think the module is too big. In essence it would have an embedding core, and then you add on as much, or as little, as you need to achieve your goals.

As it's early days I'd like to use this thread to get some initial ideas, and then as work gets underway properly I can start separating things in to separate queues.

Hi, glad to hear more progress. Yes, lighter would be great. Hope the listed features below won't make it even heavier :) Although I can get around from template layer mostly, I'd love to see:

1. Optional embed code for public users. This will differentiate swftools much from emfield
2. Different size options for nodes and views to get consistent across different themes.
3. Since it doesn't support transcoding, it's reasonable to make thumbnail handlings via filefield easier.
4. Import capabilities from FTP files, flashnode has it, but I'd love to see it with filefields. Imagine 120MB or so flvs

I'm not totally sure what the goals with the module are, but personally I'd like to see some sort of integration with embedded media field so we can:

1. Have all videos displayed through JW or flow player.

2. Use the em fields to insert externally hosted FLVs that are currently inserted by <swf file="">. This would make it easier for normal users to contribute video content. They just insert the link to the flv or the embed code into the field and viola, they've added a video.

3. Views integration through em field! This means creating lists of our videos with thumbnails and such.

Maybe what I'm asking is way beyond the scope of this module... I don't know. For my site at this point in time... embedded media field handles embed codes and I have swf tools to add videos that I only have a file link to, not an embed code. Since my videos are a mix of em field and swf tools, I can't create consolidated views of them until they work together or one performs the functions of both.

I would like to see a way to protect the content being played, e.g. make a way to stream it without exposing the filename in the HTML source, and utilising .htaccess to protect the directory where the files are. I don't know if this is possible, but it would be great for people who want to sell media and offer previews etc...

Generating the code for thumbnails according in accord with a preset pattern, and adding/removing that code if they exist or not.

I've been following swf tools from some time now and it's joyful see it's progress and features integration. I really think this modules dictates the standards on embedding flash content in Drupal.
But I think there's a lack of flexibility regarding the swftools' cck formatters, since they only allow one configuration per player. I already posted a feature request (http://drupal.org/node/526904) suggesting that there shouldn't be just one configuration available per player, but "player profiles": different player configurations that can be used on different filefields across the site (views and nodes).

I'd like to see an option to provide users with embed code. So they can place their uploaded material outside of the website.

The remarks about an embed module for D7 on the SWF_Tools project page, are confusing. It only seems an idea that seems to have been left alone for far over a year. Normally that would (already within months) apply for abandoned projects and the issue closed?

Status of embed module?

Or: if that's the better way to do things; the project can be taken over?
